I find that many of my clients often struggle to start a solid morning routine.
First let's begin by understanding why having some type of morning ritual is so important. I believe we always have the ability to create the type of day we want to have. We can literally do this by cultivating it when we wake.
For example, one of the very first things I do upon rising is immediately begin flooding my mind with thoughts of gratitude. Why? Well, because honestly, it's really hard to be in a bad mood when you are thinking about all the things you are most grateful for in life. Go ahead, try it yourself and report back in the comments below.
If we make a conscious effort to take a few moments of solitude and self-care in those first few moments of the morning then we can shift our entire day! I mean, that's pretty darn powerful.
The biggest pitfalls that I tend to see clients make in the beginning is taking on WAY too much too soon. As with any lifestyle or behavior-changing habits, consistent small shifts are what builds the solid foundation to acquire massive change.
My advice? Don't try to sit and meditate for 30 minutes if you don't already have a meditation practice. It's okay to start small. I'll give you a permission slip if you need one. Also, don't put too much pressure on yourself to develop this morning routine. Allow it to develop overtime.
If starting out with a 20 or 30 minute routine feels overwhelming then maybe just commit to waking up, taking 10 deep belly breaths, and flooding your mind with happy thoughts during the time it takes you to breathe and then, start your day! Work from there. Keep what works and remove what doesn't. Be flexible and welcome change.
What's my morning routine? Watch the video above to find out what mine currently looks like. I also share the 3 books that I read from each morning, which I've included links to below. This was filmed just after one of my most favorite FREE online meditation experiences had ended so I talk a bit about that too.
